~ Rattlesnakin' Daddies ~

Could two cousins from Summerside PEI sing the blues? You bet they could if their names were Troy MacArthur and Mike Dixon. The guys released their one and only Daddies CD in late 2005 and it was a keeper. The self titled project of mostly original tunes recalls the best of artists like Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Leadbelly, Tampa Red and Robert Johnson to name a few.

Their sound ranged from acoustic delta blues to electrified blues to old-time& rag time blues. It featured both of the Daddies on guitars with Mike adding some funky kazoo on occasion and Troy blowing some mean but fine blues harp that is still delight to hear.

The guys currently play in the most excellent bluegrass old time music quartet, Saddle River String Band along James Phillips and Tom DesRoches a solo performer.

Seeing and hearing these guys live was always a treat for the ears. They were fun to watch & the easy banter back & forth in between songs would put a smile on your face if what you were drinking and smoking failed to do the trick.

There were even a couple of occasions while listening to Troy & Mike perform that I really believed they had gone down to the crossroads and a made deal with the devil because it was just not possible to sound like that otherwise! On the other hand, there were occasions while listening to them, they have reminded me of the power of the blues to create a party atmosphere where you can forget all your troubles and just P-A-R-T-Y all night long!!

The Daddies self titled CD was even nominated for a 2006 ECMA for Best Blues Album of the Year. It didn’t win but it could have. The Daddies were the real deal. When they came to visit your town you would be glad they did. RIP!
