 The Sidewalks are a five piece "Skalternative Rock" band from Charlottetown, PEI, with a strong, energetic show and a quickly growing fan base. They're ushering in a fourth wave of ska by incorporating influences drawn from mainstream pop, an upbringing in the '90s, an affection for 80s metal, a well-spun collection of records from the 70s, and some classical composition from all over the place.
Gigging started in June of 2008 with Chris raking on the guitar, Jamie laying down the groove on bass, Robyn tooting away on the trumpet, and Josh beating his drums senseless. By the fall they had enlisted their friend Steve to make the trombone whistle and they put all of their energy into developing their live show. Dance-offs, horn duels, and loads of cow bell are not uncommon at a Sidewalks show.
It wasn't long before they caught the attention of Sandbar Music Group Inc. and began working with the record label in November of 2008. The following February saw the boys jamming away on the ferry to Corner Brook, NFLD, for the 2009 East Coast Music Awards where they played the ECMA Discovery Stage, the Music PEI Rock Showcase, and learned how important it is to pace yourself when drinking whiskey. During this excursion their first single “Ready, Set, Go!” was released and has been receiving air play on KROCK 105.5 fm.
Since then The Sidewalks have performed on the IWK Telethon Charlottetown stage (televised on CTV) and returned to the studio. They can hardly bear the anticipation of releasing their first 7-song EP which was recorded with Jon Matthews of Big Grey Studios, due Fall of 2009. The title track, “Better Late Than Never,” has been released as a second single all over the web.
